Gators Open Spring Season at Freeman Memorial

LAS VEGAS – Florida women’s tennis is set to kick off the spring 2022 season this weekend, Jan. 13-15, when they travel to Las Vegas to compete in the 20th annual Freeman Memorial Women’s Tennis Championships at the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the campus of UNLV.

The Gators, ranked No. 18 in the nation, will square off against competitors from some of the best programs in the nation, including four additional teams ranked in the top 20 of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason poll. Joining the Orange & Blue will be No. 8 Stanford, No. 10 Pepperdine, No. 13 Oklahoma State and No. 16 UCLA– along with the host Rebels.

Florida will travel seven athletes out west to take part in the three-day singles and double event, including: Carly Briggs, Sara Dahlstrom, Alicia Dudeney, Rachel Gailis, Emma Shelton, Bente Spee and Sophie Williams. Shelton tallied a 7-2 mark in singles competition during the fall, while Briggs and Dudeney both ended with 6-3 marks.

Last year’s event saw Pepperdine’s Shiori Fukuda down Oklahoma State’s Mananchaya Sawangkaew, 7-5, 6-4, for the singles title while Florida’s Dudeney and Spee defeated Stanford’s Connie Ma and Angelica Blake, 6-4, to take the doubles crown.
