Fangran Tian Named UCLA Student-Athlete of Week, presented by Ready

Freshman Fangran Tian of the UCLA women’s tennis team has been selected the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week, presented by Ready, for May 22-28.

Tian captured the NCAA Division I singles championship, defeating six top-60 players in six days without dropping a set. The Beijing, China native completed her run Saturday with a 6-4, 6-2 showing versus Layne Sleeth of Oklahoma. In raising the NCAA singles trophy, Tian joined UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer Keri Phebus (1995) as the only Bruins to accomplish the feat. Tian’s journey to the title also included wins against two fellow Pac-12 standouts in Singles Player of the Year Alexandra Yepifanova of Stanford in the third round, and 11th-ranked Maddy Sieg of USC in the semifinals. Tian finished her debut season 30-7 – including a 17-6 mark opposite nationally-ranked foes – in singles play. The Pac-12 Freshman/Newcomer of the Year spent the entirety of dual-match play on the top singles court, going 15-0 during the regular season.

This is Tian’s first UCLA student-athlete of the week award of the season and of her career.
