CARY, N.C. – Alicia Dudeney is advancing to the qualifying rounds at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s All-American Championships for the Gators after posting a perfect weekend during prequalifying competition.
Continuing her strong performance in North Carolina, No. 119 Dudeney opened her Sunday with another victory at Cary Tennis Park. Matching up with Uxia Martinez Moral of Oregon, Dudeney got started with a dominant 6-1 opener before winning the match behind a 6-2 second set.
Needing just one more victory to advance to qualifying at the championships, Dudeney didn’t flinch against Hadley Doyle of Southern Methodist, grabbing a convincing: 6-3, 6-1, victory on Sunday evening. With her victory, she completed the weekend without dropping a set in prequalifying.
In the consolation bracket, Carly Briggs secured a win for the Gators. The senior met Maryland’s Hannah McColgan in the bracket and she wasted no time in claiming her victory, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 win.
Elsewhere in the consolation bracket, Emma Shelton earned a hard-fought win over Southeastern Conference foe, Gia Cohen. After taking the first set over the Mississippi State Bulldog, 6-1, Cohen responded with a 6-2 set of her own, forcing the deciding third set. Shelton rose to the occasion, taking down Cohen, 6-3, to walk away with the win.
Sophomore Bente Spee also made her way into the winning category on Sunday, defeating Indiana’s Lara Schneider. After racing out to a 6-1 opening frame, Spee had to outlast Schneider in the second set, holding on for the 7-6(5) set and match victory.
Qualifying at the ITA All-American Championships is slated to begin on Monday, Oct. 3, for Dudeney and freshman Anastasia Sysoeva. Also competing in qualifying rounds will be the doubles squads of Dudeney and Spee, as well as Briggs and Gailis.
