Cougars Open Play at Gonzaga Fall Invitational

SPOKANE, Wash. – Washington State opened play at the Gonzaga Fall Invitational by posting 10 victories Friday at the Stevens Center, played on the Gonzaga campus.
 
The day began with doubles action as the duos of Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse, along with Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom, each posted a pair of victories to advance to Saturday’s semifinals. Alvarez and Sande cruised through their two wins, defeating Portland State’s Capucine Sanoner and Nika Beukers, 6-3, followed by a 6-0 win over Eastern Washington’s Isabella Foshee and Scout Mathews. Nakagawa and Kumhom had no troubles in their first-round win over Seattle’s Liliya Dimona and Yuna Kadowaki, 6-1, followed by a 6-4 win over Portland State’s Momoko Yoshimura and Scarlett Perkins.
 
In singles play, Alvarez Sande and Nakagawa cruised through the first round of the Gold Draw, with Alvarez Sande winning 6-1, 6-2 over Seattle’s Anastasia-Aleksandra Nikolova. Nakagawa was equally impressive in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Beukers.
 
In the Blue Draw, Kumhom posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Eastern Washington’s Jennife Kida, while Tse was upset by Montana State’s Meg McCarty, 6-4, 6-4. In the Red Draw, Abouelsaad escaped with a 7-5, 7-5 win over Gonzaga’s Tiegen Aitken while Gonzaga’s Caroline Wernli defeated Markov, 6-3, 7-6 (3). In the White Draw, WSU’s Tiffany Phout came away with a 7-6 (3), 7-5 win over Vasic.
 
Play continues at the Gonzaga Fall Invitational Saturday.
