Cougars Fall to No. 26 Washington

PULLMAN, Wash. (April 19, 2024) – The 26th-ranked Washington Huskies captured the opening doubles and took the momentum into singles en route to a 4-0 win over Washington State Friday afternoon at the WSU Outdoor Tennis Courts. With the loss, the Cougars fall to 10-11 overall, 1-9 in Pac-12 play. Washington improved to 16-9, 5-5.
 
Doubles began the day and Washington escaped with the opening point with narrow wins at the top two spots. At No. 2, UW’s Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda came from behind to defeat Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom, 6-4 before WSU evened the match when Hania Abouelsaad and Martina Markov completed a 7-5 win over Melissa Sakar and Catherine Gagnon at No. 3. The deciding point came down to No. 1 where Washington’s Astrid Olsen and Alexia Jacobs, ranked No. 44 nationally, narrowly defeated Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse, 7-5, to claim the first point.
 
In singles action, Washington claimed straight-set wins at No. 2,3 and 6 to clinch the match. No. 3 was first off as Olsen, 94th nationally, completed a 6-1, 6-4 over Nakagawa just before Jacobs, ranked 103, finished off a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tse at No.2. After a close first set, Detkovskaya pulled away in the second with a 7-6 (2), 6-0 win over Markov at No. 6, clinching the team victory.
 
With the match outcome no longer in doubt, the remaining three matches were all stopped, with all in the third set. At No. 1, Alvarez Sande was even with Matsuda, 6-3, 3-6 and about to begin the third. At No. 4, Kumhom was leading Sakkar 6-4, 4-4, while Abouelsaad was…
