Cal Faces USF In Mid-Week Match

BERKELEY – After opening Pac-12 Conference play with two victories over the weekend, the California men’s tennis team makes a brief detour to nonconference action Wednesday, when the Golden Bears face San Francisco at the California Tennis Club.

Cal swept No. 52 Oregon and No. 74 Washington in the Bears’ opening Pac-12 weekend at the Hellman Tennis Complex in Berkeley.
 
First, they topped the Ducks on Saturday, with Lucas Magnaudet beating Lenn Luemkemann, 6-4, 6-3, to clinch the victory. The 65th-ranked duo of Alex Chang and Mikey Wright clinched the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-4 win over the 33rd-ranked Quinn Vandecasteele and Matthew Burton on court one.
 
On Sunday against the Huskies, Magnaudet clinched another 4-1 victory, beating Jim Hendrikx, 6-3, 7-5, at court-six singles to end the match. Wright and Chang upset another ranked duo in No. 17 Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.
 
Last Time Vs. Dons
Cal defeated San Francisco, 5-1, in their last meeting as part of a Feb. 25, 2023, doubleheader, with the Bears hosting the Dons at Hellman and then playing UC Davis on the road. Siddhant Banthia bested Moritz Hoffman, 6-4, 6-4, on court three to clinch the win over USF.
 
Poll Position
New ITA rankings come out Tuesday. In the March 5 singles poll, Ryder Jackson sits at No. 67 and Carl Emil Overbeck is at No. 107. In the March 5 doubles poll, the duo of Mikey Wright and Alex Chang is ranked 65th.

  • USF split its last two matches, losing to Northern Arizona, 4-3, last Monday and beating Hawaii, 4-0, last Tuesday
