Cal Claims No. 1 Ranking In ITA Northwest Region



BERKELEY – The California women’s tennis team added more accolades for the 2021-22 season on Wednesday, with the Golden Bears earning the top spot in the ITA Northwest Regional team ranking and numerous Bears collecting individual regional rankings. Ranked 11th nationally in the final ITA team poll of the season, Cal claimed the No. 1 regional ranking ahead of No. 2 Stanford, which was ranked 13th in the national poll.

The Bears – who finished with an 18-8 overall record and captured the Pac-12 regular-season title with an 8-1 conference mark – concluded their season in the NCAA Championship round of 16.

 

Led by the ITA Northwest Regional Coach of the Year Amanda Augustus and ITA Northwest Regional Assistant Coach of the Year Zack Warren, five Bears are featured in the ITA Northwest Regional singles poll, with three Cal duos ranked regionally in doubles. The Bears ranked in singles are Haley Giavara (18-15 record), who’s ranked fifth, Jessica Alsola (32-10), ranked sixth, Katja Wiersholm (21-3) who’s 10th, Julia Rosenqvist (26-9), ranked 11th, and Valentina Ivanov (14-13), who’s 17th. Nationally, Giavara finished 36th in singles, while Alsola was 70th.

 

In doubles, Cal’s top partnership of Giavara and Ivanov (18-8), which finished with a No. 40 national ranking, is ranked No. 2 in the region, while Alsola and Erin Richardson (10-4) – ranked 74th nationally – sit at No. 4 in the region, and the pair of Alsola and Wiersholm is fifth in the northwest.
