Buckeyes Compete in NCAA Doubles Championship – Ohio State Buckeyes

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Ohio State women’s tennis doubles tandem of Irina Cantos Siemers and Sydni Ratliff battled to the end, but ultimately fell to the No. 2 seed in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championship in Champaign, Ill., Tuesday night.

The Buckeyes, No. 43 in the most recent rankings, faced Elizabeth Scotty and Fiona Crawley of North Carolina in the last match of the day in the 32-team draw.

The Buckeyes dropped the first set, 7-5. With the match on serve at 5-all, the Tar Heel duo held on the no-ad point and then broke for the set. In the second set, UNC opened with a hold and a break before Ohio State won five games in a row to go ahead, 5-2. The Tar Heels answered with a break and a hold for a 5-4 Ohio State lead. Ohio State served it out to take the set, 6-4.

In the super tiebreaker, UNC won the first three points before Ohio State claimed the next two. The Tar Heels went on a four-point run to push ahead 7-2. The teams traded points for an 8-3 match and Ohio State then won three in a row to draw within two (8-6), answered by UNC to move a point away from clinching. Ohio State saved three match points to get even at 9-all. UNC stopped the Buckeye run and closed it out with the next two points.

The match ended the Buckeyes’ 2021-22 campaign. Ohio State was 21-6 on the year, won the Big Ten regular season title with an undefeated (11-0) campaign in league play, hosted NCAA first and second round matches.
