Bears Win 9 Matches On Day 1 In Hawaii

HONOLULU – The Cal women’s tennis team won nine of 11 matches on Thursday, the first day of the Weinman Foundation Invitational at the University of Hawaii’s Tennis Complex. Golden Bear sophomore Jessica Alsola won in singles and doubles, while newcomer Berta Passola won in singles in her Cal debut.
 
The Bears won six of seven times in singles, with the 16th-ranked Alsola defeating Washington State’s Yura Nakagawa, 6-1, 6-1, and Passola – a freshman who hails from Barcelona, Spain – beating Hawaii’s Nikola Homolkova, 7-5, 4-6, 7-5.
 
In doubles, Cal won thrice, with the Bears’ top-ranked duo – the 15th-ranked Alsola and Katja Wiersholm – besting WSU’s Maxine Murphy and Eva Alvarez Sande, 6-2.
 
Four Bears – Alsola, Cami Brown, Erin Richardson and Hannah Viller Moeller – won in singles and doubles on Thursday.
 
Day two of the Weinman Foundation Invitational begins at 9 a.m. HST on Friday.
