KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Former national champion and 11-year coaching veteran at the club level Matias Marin was announced as the next assistant coach for the Tennessee women’s tennis program by head coach Alison Ojeda on Wednesday afternoon.
Marin, originally from Rosario, Argentina, played collegiately at Baylor and clinched the 2004 NCAA National Championship against UCLA, delivering an ace for match point as a senior and captain of the Bears. During his time in Waco, he went 106-35 in singles and 79-28 in doubles.
“Danny White and our entire administration are on a mission to be the best athletic department in the country; providing us with the resources needed to hire Matias is another example of the lengths Cam Walker, JB Bowling and the rest of our admin are willing to go, to make sure we bring in the best,” Ojeda said. “Matias is an incredible coach who is well-established in the world of tennis. He has won a national title, coached top-100 WTA players on tour and has developed and trained some of our nation’s best junior players.”
“In addition to being an outstanding coach, what I love most about Matias is that he and his family fit our current culture,” Ojeda continued. “In this ever-changing world of college athletics, I know he will help me prioritize the core of our program’s values. We will make sure to always care for our student-athletes well-being, while pushing them to achieve greatness both on and off the court. When you face adversity together, you build life-long relationships and that, to me, is what winning is all about.”
Marin most recently was the Director of Tennis at the Tucker Tennis Academy in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The organization was named the USTA Developmental Program of the Year in 2014 and has a proven track record of developing collegiate-level talent.
“I would like to thank Alison and the University of Tennessee for this incredible opportunity,” Marin said. “I am beyond excited to become a part of this family. I can’t wait to start working with this amazing group of players and continue to support them in their success on and off the court. I would also like to thank my wife and two kids for all of their support in this new chapter. Go Lady Vols!”
Marin is a USPTA Certified Professional, USTA High Performance Coach, and an Argentinean National Certified Coach. Joining him on Rocky Top is his wife, Georgi, and two children, Martina and Ignacio.
