Michigan Wins Second Match at ITA Indoors, Knocks off Ohio State

SEATTLE, Wash. — Behind the doubles point and three straight-set singles matches, the No. 12-ranked University of Michigan women’s tennis team finished action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship with 4-1 win over No. 11-ranked Ohio State on Sunday evening (Feb. 13) at the Seattle Tennis Club.
Michigan grabbed the early lead, getting the doubles point behind wins at Nos. 1 and 2 after Ohio State won at No. 3.
OSU took the first match at No. 3, but Michigan’s No. 3-ranked duo of Jaedan Brown and Kari Miller held in a pivotal service game at 4-4 when Brown came in and forced on OSU volley wide on the deuce point. After breaking OSU in the next game, Miller held on her serve to wrap up a 6-4 win.
Michigan’s No. 2 pair of Julia Fliegner and Gala Mesochoritou stayed on serve throughout their match, taking advantage of a late break for a 7-5 win to clinch the doubles point. It was the first match together this season for the pair.
Ohio State evened the match at 1-1 with a win at No. 6, but Michigan answered quickly with wins at No. 3 and No. 1.
At No. 3, Fliegner used fast starts in both sets to finish with a 3-0 record at the tournament with a 6-1, 6-2 win.
Brown bounced back from a tough loss Saturday (Feb. 12) to put Michigan on the cusp of victory behind a 6-1, 6-2 win over No. 17 Sydni Ratliff at the top spot in a repeat of the championship match of the ITA Midwest Regional Championship.
Miller did the honors for Michigan, putting the fourth point on the board with a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 over Irina Cantos. Miller broke late in the second set for a 5-4 lead, serving it out in the next game to provide Michigan its fourth point of the match.
Michigan continues non-conference action next Saturday (Feb. 19), heading to Princeton for a 10 a.m. match.
