Sun Devils Go a Perfect 4-For-4 in Singles on Day 1 of the Thunderbird Invitational


TEMPE, Ariz. – Six visiting teams joined the Sun Devils at the Whiteman Tennis Center for blue skies and a full slate of tennis on Friday for Day 1 of the annual Thunderbird Invitational.

The four Sun Devils competing this week – Giulia Morlet, Sedona Gallagher, Marianna Argyrokastriti and Rachel Hanford – couldn’t have opened in stronger fashion, as each were triumphant in their respective singles matches.

SUN DEVIL SINGLES

  • Giulia Morlet (ASU) def. Valentina Ivanov (California), 7-5, 6-4 
  • Rachel Hanford (ASU) def. Erin Richardson (California), 6-1, 6-4 
  • Marianna Argyrokastriti (ASU) def. Elizabeth Goldsmith (San Diego), 6-0, 7-5 
  • Sedona Gallagher (ASU) def. Claudia De Las Heras Armenteras (San Diego), 6-4, 6-2 

In the morning doubles session, the team split its two matches, as Morlet/Gallagher edged a Michigan tandem and Argyrokastriti/Hanford were bested by an Auburn pair.

The Sun Devils are back in action tomorrow morning for Day 2 of the Thunderbird Invitational, where play is set to begin at 9 a.m. at the Whiteman Tennis Center.
