BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Aggie women’s tennis team found success on the opening day of the Texas A&M Fall Invitational Friday at the Mitchell Tennis Center, where two rounds of doubles were played followed by a round of singles.
The opening round saw three A&M teams securing victories against Utah. Jayci Goldsmith and Mary Stoiana beat Anastasia Goncharova and Madison Tattini, 6-2. Gianna Pielet and Jeanette Mireles defeated Kaila Barksdale and Marcela Lopez, 6-2. Rounding out the wins for the Maroon & White was Lizanna Boyer and Daria Smetannikov who topped Samantha Horwood and Katya Hersh, 6-3.
The second round of doubles featured four Aggie victories with three against Arkansas and one versus Utah. Goldsmith and Stoiana (6-1), Pielet and Mireles (7-5), Boyer and Smetannikov (6-4) won their matches versus the Razorbacks while Kayal Gownder and Elise Robbins secured a win versus the Utes Barksdale and Hersh, 7-6.
During the round of singles, eight Aggies matched up against the SMU Mustangs. Leading the way for the Maroon & White was No. 58 Stoiana topped Hadley Doyle, 7-6, 6-4. Fellow ranked teammate No. 109 Goldsmith won her contest with Drew Morris, 7-5, 6-2. Mireles followed suit with a 6-4, 7-6, victory over Jackie Nylander. Smetannikov defeated Taylor Johnson, 6-2, 7-6. The final match of the day saw Robbins seize a win from Cambelle Bouchard, 6-2, 7-5.
“A good day of tennis all around today,” said Texas A&M associate head coach Jordan Szabo. “We have more games to play over the next two days, and it allows us to learn and improve moving forward.”
The Aggies return to the Mitchell Tennis Center Saturday at 10 a.m. with a round of doubles, followed by a round of singles. Follow the action through the events livestream.
