TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida men’s tennis started strong at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southeast Regional on Friday, notching nine total wins with three players into the round of 16 of singles and two pairings into the round of 16 doubles.
Togan Tokac began the day facing No. 123 Magnus Johnson from Florida Gulf Coast in a match that went the distance. The native of Turkey downed Johnson, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (3) in thrilling fashion for his first ranked win of his career. Tokac followed up by defeating Georgia Southern’s Pol Del Castillo in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the third round.
No. 91 ranked Nate Bonetto worked efficiently in both of his matches on the day to head to the third round. The sophomore handled Florida State’s John Bernard on his home court, 6-3, 6-2. Dominant play was carried into the Bend, Ore. native’s match against Leo Bierbaum of Miami with another straight set triumph, 6-4, 6-4.
Jonah Braswell picked up his team-leading ninth and 10th wins of the fall season with a pair of straight set victories. The freshman started by dropping only three games against USF’s Bruno Oliveira in the 6-1, 6-2 win. Braswell then edged FAU’s Nicolas Acevedo, 6-3, 7-6 (1), sending the Sarasota, Fla. native to the third round.
Will Grant delivered a dominant 6-2, 6-4 first round victory against Franco Aubone of Miami. From there the junior met USF’s Alvin Tudorica in a back-and-forth affair. Despite going down 7-5 in the first frame, Grant answered with a 6-2 second set before falling 7-5 to Tudorica in the third.
Lukas Greif and Tanapatt Nirundorn both lost their first round matches. They will continue play in consolation singles.
In the doubles draw, Braswell/Greif notched their first win together with a comfortable 8-2 win over the Stetson pairing of Alexandre Hillhouse and Sami Ozzor. Bonetto/Grant fought hard for their win against Georgia Southern’s combo of Jacob Mitchell and Alexandros Roumpis as they battled to a tiebreak where they came out on top, 8-7 (5).
