EAST LANSING, Mich. – Newcomers and key returners took center stage in the Spartans’ first tournament action of the season, and the Michigan State women’s tennis team hauled in 24 total victories at the 2022 Spartan Invite from the MSU Outdoor Tennis Center.
Graduate student-athlete and Dartmouth transfer Nicole Conard led the way with a 5-1 combined showing at the tournament, highlighted by a trio of doubles wins alongside sophomore Charlotte Gisclon, coupled with two additional victories in singles play. Conard and Gisclon were a perfect 3-0 as a pairing on the weekend.
Senior and returning lineup contributor Tia Mukherjee was the only Spartan to publish an unblemished 6-0 combined record at the Spartan Invite, dominating alongside fellow senior Dagmar Zdrubecka in the doubles competition. Mukherjee earned a pair of three-set triumphs, and took home one straight-set victory against Eleanor Nobbs of DePaul with a 6-4, 6-4 scorecard.
Freshman Makenna Martinez published five overall victories, cleaning up on the doubles courts with a trio of wins in addition to two more in singles action. Freshman Marley Lambert came out of the tournament with one win apiece in singles and doubles, while freshman Issey Purser published a thrilling 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Marquette’s Emilija Kojcic in her only singles opportunity of the weekend. Additionally, freshman Sarah Fazlagic earned four total wins at the Spartan Invite, two apiece in both doubles and singles. Senior Monique Karoub and junior Marlo Schiffman earned two victories apiece for the Spartans.

The Spartans return to work in fall tournament play next week, as the Green & White travel to Evanston, Illinois, for the Northwestern Invite beginning Friday, Oct. 7, and running through Sunday, Oct. 9, at the Vandy Christie Tennis Center.
