Carnicella and Hamner Advance in Singles After Day One of ITA Sectionals – University of South Carolina Athletics

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The two Gamecocks representing the Garnet & Black at the ITA Sectional Championship on Thursday afternoon advanced in singles and will play in a round of 16 tomorrow in the main draw stage.

Kaitlyn Carnicella played a fifth seeded Phoebe Peus from Brown, picking up a win in two sets with a tiebreaker. The junior came out strong for the first set to win 6-2. Peus attempted to rally back for the second set, forcing Carnicella to a tiebreaker set where the Gamecock ultimately came out on top 7-3. She is set to play Melodie Collard of UVA tomorrow.

Sarah Hamner, seeded second in this tournament, topped Gabriella Broadfoot from NC State 6-4 and 6-3. Tomorrow Hamner will also face a Hoo, playing UVA’s Martina Salas.

In doubles, the two Gamecocks dropped their match to Maryland’s Kallista Liu and Danielle Hack 6-3, 6-4. The duo will play in tomorrow’s consolation bracket against UNC’s Alana Boyce and Lindsay Zink at 3:30 p.m.
