Strong Saturday at June Stewart Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Vanderbilt women’s tennis turned in an efficient Saturday at the June Stewart Invitational, claiming victories in six of seven total matches.

The Dores began their bounce-back performance after winning just one of five singles matches on Friday. Junior Sonya Macavei led the Dores off against Purdue’s Ashlie Wilson. Macavei cruised to 6-3, 6-2 match victory over the Boilermaker behind an imposing forehand. Freshman Sophia Webster followed suite, taking down Wilson’s sister, Kathryn, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Trinetra Vijayakumar joined in on the momentum moments after, pulling out a 6-0, 1-6, 10-6 tiebreaker over Tara Katarina Milic of Purdue. Vanderbilt’s lone singles winner from yesterday, freshman Jayden Jagolinzer, competed in a marathon against Purdue’s Ellie Morrow. The two split the opening sets, with Jagolinzer taking the first 7-5 and Morrow grabbing the next 7-5. Surrounded by a raucous crowd of Vanderbilt alumni, family, and friends, Jagolinzer clamped down in the tiebreaker, hanging on for a 10-7 set win to clinch the match. Senior Amy Stevens was unable to reproduce the results, falling in a back-and-forth match to Andrea Nova of Ole Miss 1-6, 6-1, 10-3.

Vanderbilt did not slow down the pace in doubles. Stevens joined Jagolinzer in a matchup against Clemson’s Parravicini and Annabelle Davis. Parravicini downed Stevens in Friday’s singles play, but Stevens responded in the doubles match: the Dores beat Clemson 6-3. Macavei and Vijayakumar returned to the court for Vanderbilt’s last match of the day, a contest versus Purdue’s Milic and Wilson. In what may have been the most watched match of the invitational, Vanderbilt executed multiple clutch points. The duo grinded out a 7-6 (5) tiebreak victory to seal a strong day for the Dores.

The final day of the June Stewart Invitational is set to begin tomorrow with singles play at 9 a.m. CT. Doubles is slated to follow at not before 11 a.m with the second round of singles afterwards.
