KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The fifth-ranked Tennessee men’s tennis team routed No. 47 Arkansas, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Barksdale Stadium.
The Vols (13-3, 2-0 SEC) won the doubles point for the 15th time this season over the Razorbacks (11-4, 0-1 SEC), sparked by Younes Lalami and Filip Apltauer’s 6-2 effort over the UA’s Connor Smillie and Gerard Planelles on court three. Shunsuke Mitsui and Filip Pieczonka, ranked 36th as a pair, took down the Hogs’ Jake Sweeney and Bozo Barun, 6-4, to give the Vols a one-point advantage. Moments later, No. 8 Johannus Monday and Angel Diaz racked up an additional win in 6-3 fashion over Arkansas’ 45th-ranked Jared Horwood and Melvin Manuel, recording their ninth victory as a duo atop UT’s lineup.
Chris Li posted the first singles win at the No. 3 spot, taking down Manuel 6-4, 6-1, securing 71 percent of his break points. No. 27 Mitsui followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Barun on court two. The Razorbacks gained their only point of the day with a 6-4, 6-4 win on court four. The clinching effort came from seventh-ranked Monday, who cruised past Planelles in a decisive 6-2, 6-2 effort atop the lineup, posting his third clinch of the dual season.

With a 6-3 victory over Arkansas’ 45th-ranked Horwood and Manuel, Monday and Angel notched their fourth win over a ranked opponent in 2024. The duo boasts an impressive 4-0 record against pairs ranked in the top 50, including a 2-0 mark against those in the top 10.

The senior’s victory over Planelle marked his 25th career SEC singles win. He holds an impressive 13-2 conference record at the top singles position, and a 12-2 mark at the No. 2 spot.
