Zharyn, Sodan Win But Broncos Take Match

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Playing its third road match in four days, the Husky men’s tennis team had a close-fought 4-2 loss to 64th-ranked Santa Clara at SCU’s Degheri Tennis Center. Dzianis Zharyn and Ivan Sodan earned singles wins for the Dawgs, who have one match left on their Spring Break California trek, on Thursday at Pepperdine.
 
Washington (6-8) has had to play from behind in its last four matches, dropping the doubles point each time. The Dawgs played a new duo at the third doubles spot today, starting Heman Nama and Sodan, and the two took a 3-0 lead over Santa Clara’s Honnappa/Buxman, but the Broncos duo rallied for a 6-4 win to clinch the point. That followed a 6-3 Santa Clara win at No. 2 over Nedim Suko and Brett Pearson. Cesar Bouchelaghem and Dzianis Zharyn were victims of terrible timing, as they had two match points at 5-4 in the No. 1 doubles match when Santa Clara clinched.
 
In singles play, Zharyn won his fourth consecutive decision after having two DNFs over the weekend. He defeated Sebastian Buxman, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles to put the Huskies on the board.

Sodan, the freshman from Croatia, got his second-straight win at No. 5 singles, overcoming Tiago Boschmans in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. He is now 5-4 in dual play.
 
With Nedim Suko battling early in a third set on court four, the Dawgs were hoping Bouchelaghem could take a third set on court one, but Guillaume Dalmasso clinched the match with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win, and Suko’s final match was suspended.
 
Han-Chih Lin and Jim Hendrikx dropped straight set singles matches at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively.
