WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Penn State women’s tennis team (12-14, 4-8 B1G) fell in the second round of the Big Ten Tournament to Maryland (17-8, 6-6 B1G) on Thursday.
DOUBLES
The Maryland women’s tennis team took the first point when they took two out three courts. Karly Friedland and Olivia Dorner won the first doubles match for Penn State against Minorka Miranda and Marta Mur Perez, 6-4.
The Terrapins took the next two matches to clinch the point. Sofiya Chekhlystova and Alexandra Nielsen fell to Selma Cadar and Mary Brumfield, 6-4. Ioana Gheorghita and Alina Lebedeva lost their match to Jojo Bach and Hannah McColgan, 6-4.
SINGLES
Maryland held on to the lead for the rest of the match. At No. 3, Yvonne Zuffova dropped her match to Selma Cadar, 6-3, 7-5. Olivia Dorner tied the match up at 1-1 with her win over Hannah McColgan, 6-1, 6-2. Ioana Gheorghita fell in a tough- fought match to Minorka Miranda, 6-4, 7-5.
No. 68 Sofiya Chekhlystova won her match at No. 1 against Marta Perez Mur, 6-0, 4-6, 6-2. Karly Friedland lost a close match in three sets to Kalista Liu, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5.
