WOMEN’S TENNIS CENTRAL: #18 Tennessee Hosting Furman and Chattanooga

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee – The Tennessee women’s tennis team is set to kick off the 2024 slate by hosting Furman and Chattanooga on Sunday afternoon at Goodfriend Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to begin at noon ET when the Lady Vols will face the Paladins, followed by the match against the Mocs at 4 p.m. ET.

The Lady Vols will meet Furman for the 13th time in program history. The Volunteers lead the series 12-0 and have collected seven of those wins in Knoxville. The last time the two squads met was last season in Furman, S.C., when the Lady Vols won, 6-1, over the Paladins.

Tennessee leads the all-time series against Chattanooga, 10-3. The Lady Vols have won their last six meetings against the Mocs. The last time the two squads met was in 2020 on Rocky Top when the Lady Vols earned a 4-1 victory.

In the ITA’s Jan. 3 preseason rankings, the squad is No. 18 nationally to begin 2024. This is the highest preseason ranking the team had seen under the direction of head coach Alison Ojeda. The last time the team was ranked in the top 20 to start a season was in 2012 when it also started at No. 18.

Tennessee returns six of its eight players from last season’s campaign. In 2023, the team finished with its best finish in program history, going 21-6. In SEC play, the squad went 11-2, good for the highest SEC win total in program history and its second double-digit league win campaign ever. The last time the Lady Vols collected double-digit conference wins was in 2001 with 10.

Also in 2023, the team went undefeated on Rocky Top, logging a perfect 13-0 record. The Lady Vols defeated three ranked teams at home, No. 19 UCF, No. 8 Auburn and No. 17 Florida. That milestone marks just the fifth time in program history Tennessee has finished the regular season undefeated at home, with two of those coming in the Ojeda era.
