At 37 years of age, Stan Wawrinka is hoping to take his game to the next level so he can finish his career on his terms. To do that, he has brought former coach Magnus Norman, the man who guided him to all three of his Grand Slam titles, back into the fold.
Norman, who was present in New York this year, is now committed to staying with the Swiss during the offseason with the hopes of bringing Wawrinka back to top form in 2023.
The pair had previously worked together for eight years, officially parting ways in September of 2022.
Two years later they are ready to write a final chapter…
“With Magnus, we want to finish writing our story together,” Wawrinka said, according to Le Matin.
Wawrinka, who will turn 38 next March, says nobody knows his game better than the Swede.
“There was a change after the US Open,” he said. “I decided to stop with Dani Vallverdu and, together with Magnus, we are looking for the best possible balance to write a final chapter. He is the one who knows my game the best, the one who has helped me the most in my career. He will take care of the off-season and the biggest tournaments including those of the Grand Slam. The rest we have to discuss.”
On the mend from two foot surgeries, not long after a double knee surgery in 2017, Wawrinka has shown good form of late. He has engineered wins over Daniil Medvedev and Casper Ruud this fall, and currently sits at 194 in the ATP rankings.
He will face Brandon Nakashima on Thursday in Basel, with a spot in the quarterfinals on the line.
