Utes Fall Short to Open Conference Play

SALT LAKE CITY – The Utah men’s tennis team wrapped up the first conference match of the season with a competition in Washington’s favor, finishing 0-4. Despite pushing the deciding court into a tiebreaker for the doubles point, the Utes ceded the point to the Huskies and went on to drop three more courts in singles play.

During doubles play, the Utes put up an impressive fight. After Jayson Blando and Michael Blando defeated the Husky duo on court two in a 6-3 match, Utah dropped the match at the No. 3 spot. This left the doubles point to be decided on court one.

Geronimo Espin Busleiman and Bruno Krenn tied the Washington pair 6-6 and pushed into a tie breaking game but were unable to hold the lead and fell 7-4 in the tiebreaker. This left Washington with the first point.  

As the match moved to singles play the Utes sought to secure the necessary courts for a clinch. On court one, Espin Busleiman dropped the first set 6-4 and won the second 6-2, pushing the match into a third set. Prior to finishing, Utah dropped court four, bringing the score to 2-0 in the Huskies’ favor. Espin Busleiman’s third set was unfinished before the match was clinched.

On court two, Krenn had dropped the first set in a close 7-5 game and tied the second set 6-6, pushing into a tiebreaker. Tying again at 6, Krenn was unable to take the upper hand and dropped the set 7-6 with an 8-6 tiebreak.
