Utah falls 6-1 to No. 10 Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of Utah women’s tennis program faced No. 10 Cal on Saturday afternoon. The Utes were defeated 6-1 by the Golden Bears, giving the Utes their fifth loss of the season.

Utah 1, Cal 6

Utah started off slow in doubles competition. On court No. 2, Sara Akid and Kaila Barksdale fell to Cal duo Jessica Alsola and Valentina Ivanov 6-0. Then, Samantha Horwood and Kat Lyman were defeated 6-3 on the third court by Katja Wiersholm and Tiziana-Marie Schomburg, allowing Cal the doubles point.

The Utes continued to move slowly in singles. Sara Akid faced Lan Mi on the No. 6 court, falling 6-3, 6-3. Next to finish was Marcela Lopez on the first court, who was defeated 6-4, 6-2 by Ivanov. On court No. 4, Emma Kamper fell to Wiersholm 6-2, 6-1. Then, Barksdale was downed by Hannah Viller Moeller 6-2, 6-2 on the second court. Ana Luiza Cruz battled hard in a three-set match on the No. 5 court, but ultimately fell to Mushika 4-6, 6-3, 9-7. Kat Lyman wrapped up the match on the third court, gaining the lone point for Utah where she claimed a 6-2, 7-6(8), 10-8 victory over Alsola.

The Utes’ record changes to 10-5 overall, and 2-2 within the Pac-12. 

UP NEXT

Utah will stay on the road to take on Stanford tomorrow at 1 p.m. (MT). The Utes are set to return to the George S. Eccles Tennis Center to host UCLA on Friday, April 5 and USC on Sunday, April 7.
