Trojans Outlast Huskies, Women’s Tennis Drops First Conference Match

LOS ANGELES – The Huskies won the doubles point but couldn’t find momentum in singles as the women’s tennis team drops to 10-5 with a 4-1 loss Friday afternoon at USC.

The 11th-ranked Trojans (9-4) were highlighted by their four top singles players all in the national rankings, three of them earning victories over the Huskies.

The bright spot of the afternoon for the Dawgs was doubles action, where second and third doubles secured victories, giving Washington its only point of the afternoon.

First time doubles duo Erika Matsuda and Dariya Detkovskaya defeated USC’s Fairclough/Koenig combo 6-4 soon after Melissa Sakar and Catherine Gagnon took down the 36th-ranked Fry and Piper, 6-2 to improve to 4-0 as a pair.

The Dawgs battled but couldn’t stack up enough games to win much of any set, with Gagnon (6-2, 6-0) and Sakar (6-2, 6-1) dropping two matches quickly.

It came down to Matsuda on the first court, but the Trojans’ 88th-ranked Snow Han finally clinched the match for USC after a long deciding point rally.

Washington looks to bounce back quickly as the Dawgs take on No. 19 UCLA Saturday at noon at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
