LOS ANGELES – The No. 11 ranked USC women’s tennis team opened Pac-12 play by prevailing over No. 25 Washington in a 4-1 victory on Friday, Mar. 8, at Marks Stadium. 
 
The match began with USC dropping the doubles point following losses on courts two and three. The Trojan duo of No. 36 ranked Parker Fry and Grace Piper fell to UW’s Melissa Sakar and Catherine Gagnon 6-2 on court two. No. 11 Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney followed it up with a 6-2 win over Washington’s pair of Alexia Jacobs and Astrid Olsen on court one. The Trojan’s McKenna Koenig and Lily Fairclough dropped the match against UW’s Dariya Detkovskaya and Erika Matsuda 6-4 on court three. 
 
USC turned the corner after doubles and dominated singles play. USC’s Naomi Cheong started the momentum with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Washington’s Sarah-Maude Fortin on court five. No. 113 ranked USC fifth-year Eryn Cayetano wasn’t far behind with a win against Melissa Sakahr, 6-2, 6-1, on court four. Next, No. 31 ranked Sophomore Emma Charney downed No. 67 ranked Alexia Jacobs 6-2, 6-3 on court two. Finally, no. 88 ranked Junior Snow Han clinched the match for USC, defeating Erika Matsuda on court one 6-3, 7-5. 
 
The remaining matches on courts three and six were suspended. On court three, USC’s No. 51 ranked Grace Piper was leading 7-5, 5-3 over Astrid Olsen. Junior McKenna Koenig was making a run against Catherine Gagnon with a score of 3-6, 6-5, before play was suspended on court 6. 
 
USC is back in action tomorrow, Saturday, March 9, as the Trojans take on Washington State for a 2:30 p.m. PT matchup at Marks Stadium.
