Tributes pour in ahead of longshot’s final tournament

Tributes pour in ahead of longshot’s final tournament

The historic and inspiring professional tennis career of Serena Williams has reached its final stage. Naturally, it’s one of the biggest stages in all of sports.

Williams enters the U.S. Open on Monday at the age of 40 and with as many eyes on her as ever before. The 23-time Grand Slam singles-winner has already announced she will retire after this month’s tournament in New York City. If her past performance at USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is any indication, Serena’s run at the U.S. Open could be a lengthy one.

Since her first appearance at the tournament in 1998, Williams has won it all six times, finished runner-up another four times and fallen during the semifinals four times as well. After a leg injury forced Serena to withdraw from the U.S. Open in 2021, Monday’s match will mark her first match in Queens since reaching the singles semifinals in 2020.

Here’s what you need to know before betting on the GOAT.

Notable Serena Trends

With a win, Serena would join Martina Navratilova, Kimiko Date and sister Venus Williams as the only female players in the Open Era to win a U.S. Open match as a teenager, in her 20s, in her 30s and in her 40s.
Serena Williams has never lost in the first round at the U.S Open (20 consecutive wins)
Per U.S. Open: In 2022, Serena has struck only 25 aces, landing 67% of her first serves and winning 65% of those points. However, the second serve has come under attack in her four 2022 duels, prevailing in just 40% of points off that delivery.
