Tennis Trips West for Trio of Matches in Illinois


 
EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — No. 75 Rutgers women’s tennis (8-3, 0-1 B1G) is set for a road trip out west for a trio of matches in Illinois. The Scarlet Knights will start the weekend off against UIC (3-7) on Thursday, March 14 (11:00 a.m. ET), before taking on back-to-back B1G opponents, No. 45 Northwestern (9-4, 0-0 B1G) on Saturday, March 16 (1:00 p.m. ET) and No. 46 Illinois (8-5, 0-0 B1G) on Sunday, March 17 (1:00 p.m. ET).
 
Last Time Out
 
Rutgers recorded five singles wins en route to its 5-2 win over Army on Sunday, March 3 at the East Brunswick Racquet Club for its second Community Day match of the season.
 
At the start of singles play, Tara Chilton equalized the match at one with a straight-sets victory at the first lineup spot. The Black Knights quickly responded, though, jumping back out to a 2-1 lead with a victory on court No. 6.
 
Mai Nguyen and Minchae Kim quickly put RU back in front, 3-2, with straight-set victories on courts No. 3 and 4.
 
Naomi Karki added the match-clinching win for the Scarlet Knights. The freshman picked up a victory in her first set, before Paige Herremans tied the match with a second-set win. Karki kept battling, though, cruising to a 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the dual.
 
Amira Badawi ended the afternoon with a three-set victory at the second court. The senior won her first set, 6-3, before narrowly falling, 6-7(1), in the second frame. Badawi closed out the match with a 10-7 win in a 10-point tiebreak to give the Scarlet Knights their 5-2 victory.
 
Recapping the 2023 Fall
 
The Scarlet Knights are coming off a successful fall schedule, where they posted a team record of 78-59 in singles and doubles competitions through seven total events.
 
Leading the way in singles play was Kim, who claimed 17 total victories, nine singles and eight doubles.
 
Nguyen also had a strong showing, recording an 8-2 record in singles competitions. The sophomore finished the campaign on a five-match win streak which included two straight-set victories and three comeback wins.
 
In doubles, the pair of Nguyen and Badawi won five matches together, the most out of RU’s 18 different duos.
