Tennis Opens SEC Play With Two Weekend Doubleheaders


COLUMBIA, Mo. — University of Missouri tennis is set to host two weekend doubleheaders for its first home action of the season. Missouri first welcomes No. 11 University of Georgia and Lindenwood University on Friday, March 1, at 11 a.m. CT and 4 p.m. CT, respectively. The Tigers then close out the weekend with matches on Sunday, March 3, against No. 20 Tennessee and Lindenwood at 9 a.m. CT and 4 p.m. CT, respectively.  

This weekend marks the opening of Southeastern Conference play for Mizzou, who is penciled in to play at the Country Club of Columbia, weather permitting. If needed, the matches will move indoors to the Green Tennis Center. 

With a 2-8 record for the young season, the Tigers most recently competed against the University of Colorado and dropped 4-1 to the Buffs. The No. 1 duo of seniors Mae Canete and Gabriela Martinez dominated against Colorado with an early 6-1 win, though Mizzou walked out of doubles action down 1-0. Canete battled through a three-set singles match in the No. 1 spot and was able to grab the point for the Tigers, 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. 

The Tigers last faced off against Georgia on March 5, 2023, and dropped 4-0 in Athens, Georgia. Mizzou is searching for its first program win against the Bulldogs, with the series record currently sitting at 10-0. UGA is walking into the match 5-3 on the 2024 season with a 1-2 record on the road. 

Meanwhile, Tennessee enters this weekend 8-2 this season and currently holds a three-match win streak. In the most recent meeting between the programs, the Volunteers came out on top, 4-0, on March 3, 2023, in Knoxville, Tennessee. The Tigers will look to turn the tables against UT as they hold a 2-8 record all-time against them. 

The weekend’s home opener marks the first time in program history Mizzou has competed against Lindenwood, who is sitting at a 3-5 record early in the season.

UP NEXT 

The Tigers will hit the road and travel to Auburn, Alabama, to compete against No. 11 Auburn University on Friday, March 8, with first serve set for 3 p.m. CT. Missouri will then head to Alabama for a Sunday dual against the Crimson Tide after the match. Action is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. CT.
