Tennis Defeats Army – Rutgers University Athletics

EAST BRUNSWICK, N.J. — No. 68 Rutgers women’s tennis (8-3, 0-1 B1G) recorded five singles wins en route to its 5-2 win over Army (10-7) on Sunday afternoon at the East Brunswick Racquet Club for its second Community Day match of the season.
 
Doubles
 
The Black Knights clinched the doubles points with wins at the second and third courts.
 
Yana Gurevich and Tara Chilton picked up their fifth win as a duo this spring with a 6-3 victory on court No. 1.

Singles

 

At the start of singles play, Chilton equalized the match at one with a straight-sets victory at the first lineup spot. The Black Knights quickly responded, though, jumping back out to a 2-1 lead with a victory on court No. 6.

 

Mai Nguyen and Minchae Kim quickly put RU back in front, 3-2, with straight-set victories on courts No. 3 and 4.

 

Naomi Karki added the match-clinching win for the Scarlet Knights. The freshman picked up a victory in her first set, before Paige Herremans tied the match with a second-set win. Karki kept battling, though, cruising to a 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the dual.

 

Amira Badawi ended the afternoon with a three-set victory at the second court. The senior won her first set, 6-3, before narrowly falling, 6-7(1), in the second frame. Badawi closed out the match with a 10-7 win in a 10-point tiebreak to give the Scarlet Knights their 5-2 victory.
