THE FLATS – Three members of the Georgia Tech men’s tennis team have been recognized in the most recent ITA Division I Men’s Collegiate Tennis Rankings.
In addition to the Top 25 teams, this week’s poll included the Top 125 singles players and Top 60 doubles pairs. In singles, Andres Martin jumped to No. 63 and Keshav Chopra sits at No. 86. Tech’s doubles pair of Martin and Marcus McDaniel has been ranked at No. 60.
Martin is a standout player for Tech and has led the team at the No. 1 position in every spring match this season. He is currently on a three-match winning streak in singles play and has a 7-2 record in dual match competition. Martin has defeated two nationally ranked opponents, both in two-set victories. He took down Pepperdine’s No. 31 Daniel De Jonge 6-3, 6-2 and Auburn’s No. 66 Tyler Stice 6-2, 6-1.
At the No. 3 position, Chopra has faced a variety of opponents and has claimed some exciting victories. In Tech’s hard-fought battle against Stanford, the Jackets claimed a major upset win as Chopra defeated No. 2 Nishesh Basavareddy in two sets, 6-1, 6-2. Chopra currently has a 6-3 dual match record; he is 1-1 at the No. 2 position and 5-2 at the No. 3 position.
The doubles pairing of Martin and McDaniel has continued to provide success for Tech. Despite only playing together once in the fall, the duo is on a six-match winning streak and has a 6-1 dual match record. During the ITA Kickoff weekend, Martin/McDaniel earned a 6-4 win over Stanford’s Fery/Kolasinski and were leading Pepperdine’s No. 34 Zeitvogel/De Jonge 5-4 before the match went unfinished.
