EVANSTON, Illinois – Northwestern men’s tennis coach Arvid Swan has signed a contract extension that will keep him in Evanston through the 2026 season, Combe Family Vice President for Athletics and Recreation Dr. Derrick Gragg announced on Thursday.
“Arvid’s accomplishments at Northwestern speak for themselves and our athletic department is in a better place because of his phenomenal stewardship of Wildcats men’s tennis,” Gragg said. “Northwestern has become a force in the Big Ten and on the national stage, and that doesn’t happen without the tremendous leadership and character of Arvid Swan.”
Swan’s tenure at Northwestern has been transformative for the program, taking the Wildcats from an unranked program at the bottom of the Big Ten to a regular participant in the NCAA Tournament that has surged up the national rankings during his time in Evanston.
“From the student-athletes to my incredible colleagues in the Northwestern athletic department, I feel extremely proud to be a part of this program for years to come,” Swan said. “As we continue to raise the standard of Northwestern Men’s Tennis, I’m grateful to Dr. Gragg and his senior staff for their commitment and continued investment in our vision for this team.”
Swan’s association with Northwestern Tennis began almost two decades ago, when he joined the men’s program as an associate head coach in 2003. After a season at the helm of DePaul, Swan returned to Evanston to lead the Wildcats.
After engineering the highest jump in the national rankings over a one-year period in Division I during his second season with the Wildcats, Swan guided Northwestern to six-consecutive NCAA tournament appearances from 2012 to 2017.
His 2016 squad remains the best in program history, a historic group that won a school-record 26 matches and hosted the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament as the No. 14 overall seed. Konrad Zieba, Sam Shropshire and Strong Kirchheimer all earned First Team All-Big Ten honors and Swan was named the ITA Midwest Region Coach of the Year for his efforts.
Swan had the Wildcats headed toward another top-20 finish in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic canceled the remainder of the season.
