Sun Devils Tame Cougars in 7-0 Sweep

California

PULLMAN, Wash. – The Sun Devil Women’s Tennis team (12-3, 2-1) is back in the win column after handling Washington State (7-7, 0-3) in a clean sweep, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon at the Simmelink Tennis Courts at Hollingbery Fieldhouse.

The Sun Devils have now won 22 of their past 23 meetings with the Cougars dating back to 2000. It’s also their sixth clean sweep of the season.

The afternoon began with gritty doubles play, in which the Sun Devils and Cougars split the first two matches. Locked in a 5-5 battle on Court 2, Sedona Gallagher and Rachel Hanford delivered the final blow, winning 7-5 and snatching the doubles point.

The Sun Devils have now won the doubles point in 13 of their 15 matches this spring.

Momentum made its way into singles play, where the Sun Devils won five of six first sets. Freshman Chelsea Fontenel was the first off, earning win No. 12 on the season with a swift defeat of Washington State’s Eva Alvarez Sande in straight sets (6-2, 6-0).

Sedona Gallagher brought home the next Sun Devil victory, and Marianna Argyrokastriti clinched it moments later. With the match already clinched, the Sun Devils still received big performances from Domenika Turkovic, Patricija Spaka and Rachel Hanford in singles play.
