Stellar Academic Performance Continued in Fall Semester with Top-Five GPA

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah’s student-athletes continued to perform at historically high levels academically in the Fall of 2023, producing the fifth-highest semester grade-point average for the recently completed semester. Utah’s student-athletes produced a semester GPA of 3.343, following the Spring 2023 GPA of 3.384, which still ranks fourth all-time.

Utah Athletics has now achieved 35 consecutive semesters with a departmental GPA of 3.00 or higher, and the past eight semesters have seen Utah’s student-athletes post the eight best GPAs in department history.

The academic success by Utah’s athletics programs also coincides with tremendous success in competition in the Fall of 2023. The Utes extended their streak of qualifying for a bowl game to nine seasons, and the women’s cross-country team notched its second-highest finish at the NCAA Championships in November, finishing in 13th place, just behind its school-record 12th-place finish in 2022.

“We are tremendously proud of our student-athletes, and the way they excel in everything they do,” said Mark Harlan, Director of Athletics. “The University of Utah provides an opportunity to compete at the highest level athletically, and our students continue to demonstrate that they are elite in their academic performance as well. We are incredibly proud of the hard work they put in every day and their commitment to achieving success in all aspects of their lives. I’d also like to recognize and thank our terrific academic support staff for their dedication and the role they play in these achievements.”

Utah’s record-setting GPAs continue to parallel its tremendous success in NCAA graduation rates. According to the most recent NCAA Graduation Success Rate (GSR), 94 percent of Utah student-athletes graduated within six years of enrolling. It was the sixth consecutive year that Utah’s score has met or exceeded the 93-percent benchmark, and the Utes’ 94-percent rate for 2023 ties for the second-best mark in program history while tying for fourth among all public institutions in power conferences.

In the Fall 2023 semester, 11 Utah student-athletes earned their degrees.
