Steinberg to Depart Michigan Men’s Tennis Program

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Adam Steinberg, University of Michigan head men’s tennis coach, will be departing the program after nine seasons to become the head coach at the University of Florida.

Steinberg put the Michigan men’s tennis program back on the national map, guiding the Wolverines to back-to-back NCAA quarterfinal appearances in 2022 and 2023.

This season’s squad went 27-5 with the second most wins in program history. The Wolverines had a 13-match win streak, the program’s longest since 1988, and was ranked in the top 10 all season, finishing at No. 6. Steinberg coached three players to All-America honors, including the NCAA national runner-up in singles, Ondrej Styler, who is the fourth Wolverine to ever reach the finals and the first since 1987.

Hired in 2014, Steinberg led Michigan to its biggest turnaround in school history during the 2016 season, increasing U-M’s win total from seven to 21. The Wolverines went 14-0 at the Varsity Tennis Center, marking the first undefeated season at the VTC.

Success continued for Steinberg as he led the Wolverines to three Big Ten Tournament championship appearances and seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

The Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2021, Steinberg delivered to Michigan its first win over Ohio State in 21 years and for the first time since 1980, four players were named All-Big Ten.

In 2022, Michigan captured multiple wins over top-ranked opponents including No. 1 TCU, Ohio State at Nos. 2 and 4, and No. 6 Baylor. A 13-match win streak and a perfect 16-0 record at home during the season culminated with a Big Ten Tournament Championship, the program’s first since 1996. The ITA Midwest Coach of the Year, Steinberg helped to send Michigan to the Elite Eight for the first time in 34 years.

In total, Steinberg coached Michigan players to nine All-America honors, two Big Ten Players of the Year and 15 First-team all-conference selections. He won more than 72 percent of his matches as head coach in Ann Arbor (172-64).
