Penn State Women's Tennis Kicks Off Fall Season at Charlotte Invitational


CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Penn State women’s tennis team opened their fall season with day one of tournament play at the Charlotte Invitational. The first day of play consisted of two rounds of doubles and one round of singles play. 
 
Singles
 
Olivia Dorner lost her match to Emilia Alfaro of ETSU, 7-5, 6-0.
 
Carla Girbau battled hard through her match against Daniela Rivera of ETSU. However, Girbau ultimately lost by a match score of 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2.
 
Ioana Gheorghita fell to Vipasha Mehra of Iowa, 6-4, 6-4.
 
Karly Friedland lost her match to Yunuen Elizarraras of ETSU, 0-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.
 
Doubles
 
Karly Friedland and Ioana Gheorghita had a successful day of doubles. The pair defeated Ralitsa Alexandrova and Daniela Rivera of ETSU, 6-0. Friedland and Gheorghita also collected a win over Emilia Alfaro and Mariya Shumeika of ETSU, 6-4.
 
Olivia Dorner and Carla Girbau faced two losses together. The duo was defeated by Emilia Alfaro and Mariya Shumeika of ETSU,6-3, and Vipasha Mehra and Pia Kranholdt also of ETSU, 6-1.
 
The Nittany Lions will continue play in the Charlotte Invitational on Saturday, September 23.
