NU Hits the Road to Take on South Alabama, Clemson


Coming off its season-opening win, the Nebraska men’s tennis team travels for the first time in the spring season to Clemson, S.C. to take on South Alabama on Saturday and Clemson on Sunday at the Duckworth Family Tennis Facility. Scouting South Alabama 
• The Jaguars finished the 2022 season 17-7, including a 4-1 conference record in the Sun Belt. 
• South Alabama returned seven players from last year’s team including the Sun Belt player of the year and the No. 123 ranked singles player Sébastien Collard. 
• The Jaguars are off to a strong start this spring, with a 3-1 record. 

Scouting Clemson 

• The Tigers are coming off of a tough 2022 season which saw them go 13-14 overall and 2-10 in ACC play. 

• Much of Clemson’s struggles came on the road, where the team finished 0-8. At home, they proved to be a tougher matchup finishing the season with a 10-4 home record. 

• Ryuhei Azuma is the top ranked singles Clemson player, coming in at No. 118. 

Series History

Nebraska is 0-2 all time against South Alabama, with their last matchup being in March of 2008. Sunday will be the first time that Nebraska has faced off against Clemson. 

 

Up Next

The Huskers will return to Lincoln, where they will host Cornell on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Sid and Hazel Dillon Tennis Center. 

Quick Note

• Last season, the Huskers tallied three-straight Big Ten victories, the first time since the team accomplished the feat in its first season as a conference member (2011-12). NU also secured its first five-win conference season since joining the conference and just their third five-win season in program history. 

Kobelt Named Husker Assistant Coach 

• Nebraska Men’s Tennis Head Coach Sean Maymi announced the hiring of Peter Kobelt as the newest member of the Nebraska coaching staff last fall. Prior to Nebraska, Kobelt served as the volunteer assistant coach at Kentucky for two seasons from 2020 to 2022. He was responsible for implementing the doubles strategy and on-court fitness for the entire team and coached the No. 1 ranked ITA player, Liam Draxl, through the semifinals matches at the 2021 NCAA Men’s singles competition.
