CHICAGO — The No. 7 USC men’s tennis team made a singles surge in the quarterfinals of ITA National Indoor Championship action, but it wasn’t enough to top No. 2 seed Kentucky, who claimed the match 4-3 today in Chicago.
The Wildcats controlled doubles from start to finish, defeating USC on courts one and three. USC’s Makk/Colby fell 6-3 to Kentucky’s Draxl/Weekes, moments before No. 12 Stefan Dostanic and Bradley Frye were beat by Baadi/Ayeni 6-4.
Kentucky extended their lead in singles as No. 115 Taha Baadi beat Trojan #118 Bradley Frye 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4 singles. A Trojan turnaround was still in reach as #35 senior Stefan Dostanic recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win on center court over Liam Draxl. At the No. 2 spot, #34 Peter Makk won in fight on fashion, defeating #66 Alafia Ayeni 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. USC’s momentum continued as Lodewijk Weststrate put the Trojans on top, defeating JJ Mercer 7-5, 6-4. Kentucky struck back to even the score once more as #57 Charlelie Cosnet beat #82 sophomore Ryan /Colby 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 on court five. Finally, #69 Wojtek Marek would fall 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 to #16 Joshua Lapadat to give the Wildcats the victory.
Up next, Troy will face No. 11 seed Georgia in the consolation draw tomorrow at 10 a.m. pacific time. Just a few weeks ago, the Trojans defeated the Bulldogs 4-2 at the USTA National Campus.
