No. 60 Utah Gets Past Cougars


Box Score SALT LAKE CITY (April 9, 2023) – Freshman Eva Alvarez Sande picked up a straight-set win at No. 1 singles but it was too much Utah as the Utes posted a 6-1 win over Washington State Sunday morning at the George S. Eccles Tennis Center.
 
Doubles play opened the action and Utah (12-8, 3-4 Pac-12) captured the first two wins to clinch the doubles point. At No. 3, Utah’s Marcela Lopez and Kaila Barksdale posted a 6-1 win over Yang Lee and Hania Abouelsaad, while Katya Hersh and Samantha Horwood completed a 6-3 win over WSU’s (7-11, 0-7) Yura Nakagawa and Fifa Kumhom at No. 2. The match at No. 1 was halted with WSU’s Eva Alvarez Sande and Elyse Tse down a break at 2-5 to Utah’s Madison Tattini and Anastasia Goncharova.
 
Utah increased its lead to 2-0 when Barksdale defeated Tse, 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3. At No. 5, Lopez completed a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Abouelsaad, pushing the Utes to within one win of clinching the match.
 
Alvarez Sande provided the highlight for the Cougars as she posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Townsend at No. 1 singles. The win was Alvarez Sande’s team-leading 18th on the season as she moved to 4-3 in Pac-12 play.
 
The match was clinched when Tattini defeated Nakagawa at No. 2 in two close sets, 7-5, 6-3. Horwood made it 5-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Stefaniia Mikhailova. The final match of the day saw Goncharova pull out a first-set tiebreaker en route to a 7-6, (1), 6-1 win over Kumhom at No. 4.
 
The Cougars are next in action Friday when they travel to the Bay Area to face No. 37 California.
