No. 40 Sun Devil Men’s Tennis Earns Two Points in Defeat of No. 27 Utah

SALT LAKE CITY – The Sun Devils claimed the doubles point over the Utes without dropping a match, as the duos of Constantinos Koshis/Jacob Bullard and Nichola Cigna/Roi Ginat won their respective doubles matches. No. 40 Murphy Cassone won a hard-fought three-set match over Franco Capalbo to extend his winning streak to three matches in Pac-12 play.

No. 40 Arizona State Men’s Tennis (13-8, 2-5) was defeated 2-4 by the No. 27 Utah Utes (20-3, 5-1) Sunday afternoon in an attempt to spoil the Utes senior day.

How it Happened: 

• Koshis/Bullard made light work of their opponents, winning 6-2 over Patrik Trhac/Berk Bugarikj, then Cigna/Ginat crushed to a 6-3 victory to give the Sun Devils the first point of the match.
• Utah would respond by taking the next three points of the match, but Spencer Brachman attempted to force a third set, but fell 4-6, as Koshis would attempt to come back from a set down, but wasn’t able too falling 4-6 in the second set.
• Murphy Cassone battled through a grueling three-set match and claimed the second point for the Sun Devils with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 victory, where after falling in the tiebreaker, he took control of the match, gliding to a 6-1 third set victory.
• The Utes would clinch the match after Max McKennon forced a decisive third set, winning his second set 6-4, but fell 1-6 in the third set. Despite Jacob Bullard battling in a third set after winning the first set tiebreak 7-6, the match was clinched by the Utes dimishing any hope for the Sun Devils in taking the match to the brink.
