Yuta Kikuchi’s singles win gave Cal a temporary 1-1 tie with Washington.
SEATTLE – The 28th-ranked California men’s tennis team lost 4-3 to 56th-ranked Washington on Sunday at Quillian Tennis Stadium, with Cal sophomore Derrick Chen falling to UW’s Dzianis Zharyn to end the match and the regular season.
Cal heads to the Pac-12 Championship later this week with a 12-9 record (4-4 Pac-12). Washington is 12-10 (3-5).
In doubles, after a loss on court two, the Cal pair of Chen and Philip Hjorth won, 7-5, over Brett Pearson and Han-Chih Lin, on court three, leaving court one to decide matters. But the Bears’ 88th-ranked Yuta Kikuchi and Carl Emil Overbeck lost to the 65th-ranked Zharyn and Cesar Bouchelaghem, 7-6(3), and the Huskies claimed the doubles point.
Kikuchi tied the overall match, 1-1, when he defeated Lin, 6-2, 6-0, in singles.
Washington won the next two to take a 3-1 advantage.
But Cal rallied with wins from Lucas Magnaudet – who beat Brett Pearson, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 – and Carl Emil Overbeck – who bested Nedim Suko, 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 – to knot the match at 3-3.
In another taut three-setter, Chen dropped a 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 result to Zharyn on court three to conclude the match.
The Pac-12 Championship starts on Wednesday – though most teams won’t play until Thursday – and the tournament ends on Sunday in Ojai. The tournament bracket and Cal’s next opponent have yet to be announced.
