No. 14 Wake Forest Falls to No. 23 Florida State in Top-25 Battle

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 14 ranked Wake Forest men’s tennis team (15-6, 2-1 ACC) battled with No. 23 Florida State (9-4, 2-1 ACC) throughout Friday’s home ACC opener before falling by a final of 4-2 at the Wake Forest Tennis Center. 

Wake Forest secured the doubles point in a 6-2 decision for Jurabek Karimov and Luciano Tacchi over Florida State’s Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc and Barnaby Smith. The Deacs’ initial advantage in doubles came from the No. 30 pairing of Filippo Moroni and Juan Lopez de Azcona who won their seventh match together this spring. 

In singles, the two ranked sides battled throughout first sets up and down the courts at the Wake Forest Tennis Center before Florida State eventually secured the victory with four wins. 

The Deacs action in singles was highlighted by a top-five victory for No. 21 ranked Melios Efstathiou, as he took down No. 4 ranked Antoine Cornut-Chauvinc 6-3, 6-3. 

Wake Forest will remain at home for the conclusion of this weekend’s action, hosting No. 60 Miami and Coastal Carolina on Sunday.   

How It Happened

  • Moroni/Lopez de Azcona took a 3-0 lead on Court 1 to open doubles play.



  • The duo in first doubles took the first win of the day for Wake Forest, 6-1, just a few minutes before Karimov/Tacchi clinched the doubles point for the Deacs with a 6-2 win in second doubles.

  • All six courts were tightly-contested over the first 30 minutes of singles action, as every match was either tied or within a game.
