Michigan Blanks Boston University in Season Opener

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — The University of Michigan men’s tennis team opened the 2023 spring season with a 7-0 sweep of Boston University (0-2) on Sunday (Jan. 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center.
Patrick Maloney and Ondrej Styler cruised to a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, the first time they have played as a duo since March 26, 2021. The pair improved to 3-0 in their career. Patorn Hanchaikul and Mert Oral teamed up for the Wolverines’ No. 3 pair, also giving up just one game taking a 6-1 match. Will Cooksey and Bjorn Swenson held a 5-3 lead before the match was abandoned.
Nicholas Steiglehner earned his first dual win as a Wolverine at No. 6. He gave up just one point, defeating Adrian Pawlowski 6-0, 6-1. Jacob Bickersteth improved to 7-2 in singles play as he won at No. 2, 6-1, 6-0 over Jonah Dickson, and No. 58-ranked Swenson followed with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Cole Knutsen to improve to 9-1 in singles play and clinch the team match. Moments later, Cooksey posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 3, and Hanchaikul closed on Ben Letzer 6-1, 6-2. On Court 1, No. 16 Styler defeated Dion Loutas in the first set 6-3 and found himself down 3-2 in the second. Styler strung together four straight points to take the set 6-3 and give Michigan a perfect afternoon.
The Wolverines will battle battle No. 6 Tennessee on Thursday (Jan. 19) at 5 p.m. in a top-10 showdown at the Varsity Tennis Center.
