Miami Falls to Louisville at ITA Kickoff – University of Miami Athletics

ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Miami men’s tennis team was tagged with its first loss of the season on Sunday, falling to the Louisville Cardinals, 4-1, in the opening game of ITA Kickoff Weekend in Athens, Ga.

Graduate student Dan Martin recorded the Hurricanes’ sole singles win with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat of Louisville’s Natan Rodrigues, the 25th-ranked player in the nation.

Louisville took an early 1-0 lead after securing the doubles point with a pair of victories on courts one and three. Martin Vergara del Puerto and Franco Aubone came up short, 6-3, at first doubles, while Martin and Leo Bierbaum fell at third doubles, 6-2.

The Cardinals doubled their lead to 2-0 when Vergara Del Puerto fell to Matthew Fung, 6-1, 6-2, at fourth singles.

Martin pulled the Hurricanes back to within one with his win on court one, but Louisville’s Fabien Salle (No. 36) responded with a three-set, 2-6, 6-2, 6-0, victory over freshman Antonio Prat at third singles.

Louisville sealed the match on court five when Sergio Hernandez defeated Aubone, 7-6 (4), 6-4.

At the time of clinching, sophomore Martin Katz and freshman Nacho Serra Sanchez were battling back in their respective second matches, each winning their second sets, 6-5.

The Hurricanes will face either LSU or Georgia in the consolation game of ITA Kickoff Weekend tomorrow.
