Men's Tennis Races Past Elon, 6-1


CHAPEL HILL, N.C.—The 12th-ranked North Carolina men’s tennis team won the doubles point and never looked back on Sunday, beating Elon, 6-1, at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in a final tuneup before next weekend’s indoor national championship tournament.
 
With the win, the Tar Heels improved to 6-2 this season. Elon fell to 2-3.
 
Carolina took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point for the sixth time in eight matches this season. Brian Cernoch and Benjamin Kittay cruised to a 6-2 win at No. 2, followed by a 6-4 win by No. 37 Casey Kania and Ryan Seggerman over 55th-ranked Daniel Martin and Oskar Antinheimo.
 
Cernoch was dominant in singles, giving the Tar Heels a 2-0 lead with a quick, 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 over Martin. Cernoch is now 5-1 in singles play in dual matches this season. Karl Poling followed by breezing to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ahmed Hosni at No. 4 to make the team score 3-0 UNC. Poling is 8-3 overall this season, 5-1 in dual matches.
 
Will Jansen clinched the team win with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Veljko Krstic that made it 4-0. Seggerman improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in duals with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Nicholas Campbell at No. 2 singles. Peter Murphy gave Carolina a 6-0 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles.
 
Oskar Antinheimo won Elon’s lone match of the day, beating Anuj Watane at No. 5 in a third set tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4).
 
The Tar Heels will return to action on Friday in the opening round of the ITA National Team Indoor Championship in Chicago. The pairings for the 16-team field will be announced on Monday.
