Bulldogs Take Down No. 15 Florida State

TALLAHASSEE, Fla., – No. 24 Mississippi State was able to clinch Sunday’s match with 15th-ranked Florida State before the Seminoles were even able to get on the scoreboard.

Matt Roberts‘ Bulldogs secured the doubles point and then reeled off three consecutive singles wins to earn a 4-3 victory over FSU. It was MSU’s first win over a ranked opponent this season and improved the Bulldogs to 9-1 on the year.

Gregor Ramskogler and Petar Jovanovic started the day with a 6-3 doubles win over Joshua Dous-Karpenschif and Andreja Petrovic. But the Seminoles quickly evened things up as Alex Bulte and Loris Pourroy edged Michal Novansky and Benito Sanchez Martinez 6-4.

The doubles point came down to Court 1 where 18th-ranked Carles Hernandez and Nemanja Malesevic were able to persevere past Antoine Cournut-Chauvinc and Youcef Rihane 7-5 to claim the early momentum for Mississippi State.

Jovanovic and Hernandez made short work of things during their singles matches to put the Bulldogs ahead 3-0. Jovanovic earned his 13th straight victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Pourroy while Hernandez – ranked 84th in singles – pounded Petrovic 6-0, 6-1.

Ramskogler managed to clinch the match for MSU when he downed Dous-Karpneschif in straight sets 6-2, 7-5. It was the seventh time the graduate from Austria has clinched a match for the Bulldogs in his career.

All three of Florida State’s ranked singles competitors rallied to take the final three matches of the day.

It took three sets but third-ranked Cournut-Chauvinc outlasted Malesevic 6-1, 6-7(5), 1-0[8]. No. 38 Rihane topped Ewen Lumsden 6-4, 7-6(6) and No. 71 Jamie Connel defeated Sanchez Martinez 6-2, 7-5 as the Seminoles fell to 6-3 on the season.

Mississippi State will enjoy a bit of a break before returning home for a doubleheader Tennessee Tech (10 a.m.) and UAB (3 p.m.) on Feb. 25.
