Men's Tennis Adds Three in Recruiting Class

EAST LANSING, MICH. – MSU Men’s Tennis Head Coach Harry Jadun announced three highly-rated winter additions to his squad in Daniel Merida, Taym Al-Azmeh and Mitchell Sheldon.

Both Merida and Al-Azmeh will join the Spartans as they kick off the Spring season starting in January with a training trip to Florida prior to opening the regular season at home against Western Michigan on Jan. 19. Sheldon is the lone newcomer as a part of the class of 2028 national signing period.

“I’m really excited about this recruiting class and to be able to build around the great guys we already have on this team,” Jadun said. “It’s going to be a big spring season for the Spartans.”

Merida, a native of Madrid, Spain, holds the second-highest Universal Tennis Rating of 13.94 out of all 2024 signees in NCAA men’s tennis. He has ranked as high as No. 439 in the ATP Tour World Rankings and was ranked as high as 15th internationally in the ITF junior rankings.

The 19-year-old has already claimed two ITF M15 classification pro titles and has made the finals of an M25 and additional M15 while also having reached the Roland Garros French Open Juniors quarterfinals twice.

“We’re thrilled to have Dani join the Spartan family,” said Jadun. “He’s one of the top recruits in the nation for this year and has already had so much success on the pro tour, so we expect him to come in, compete and be an impact-player for us.”

Al-Azmeh is a 19-year-old originally from Syria that has spent the last two years playing out of Frankfurt, Germany. The promising righty that carries a 12.84 UTR high has already claimed six ITF doubles titles and has a singles title to his name.

“I’m really excited with the addition of Taym to our Spartan family,” Jadun said. “Getting a player with a winning pedigree, we’re really excited about him, he’s going to be a dynamic piece for the team.”

Sheldon is a five-star prospect that has ranked as high as No. 48 in the nation according to TennisRecruiting.net’s recruiting rankings. He also was slotted as high as No. 5 in the U.S. Tennis Association’s (USTA) B18 rankings.

“We’re really excited to add Mitch to our squad for the fall of 2024,” Jadun said. “He’s a high-level player, he has a big lefty serve and plays a very aggressive style that will fit very well on our courts.”
