It was only a matter of time, but it wasn’t supposed to be today. With Novak Djokovic’s surprise withdrawal from the French Open an hour ago, Jannik Sinner will now be crowned new ATP world No. 1 on Monday.

“It’s every player’s dream to become No 1 in the world,” Sinner said on court Tuesday. “In another way seeing Novak retiring here I think it’s for everyone disappointing. Wish him a speedy recovery.”

The 22-year-old was on court when the news broke of Djokovic’s withdrawal. The Serb had to reach the final to have a chance at keeping his top spot. Sinner took care of Dimitrov in straight sets to reach the semifinals.

The Italian becomes the first from his country to rank No. 1. After his Dimitrov win, he’s 12-0 in Grand Slam events this year and 33-2 overall on the season.

Sinner is into his third Grand Slam semifinal — he hadn’t made one at this time last year. He is also just the fourth Italian man to make the last four at Roland Garros after Adriano Panatta, Corrado Barazzutti and Marco Cecchinato.
