LOUISVILLE, Ken. – The University of Notre Dame women’s tennis team defeated Louisville Cardinals 4-0 on Sunday, followed by a 4-0 shutout in a neutral match against the Xavier Musketeers. Sophomores Akari Matsuno and junior Bojana Pozder led the Irish, each going 2-0 in singles.
In the first match of the day, Notre Dame secured the doubles point against a second straight ACC opponent, as Carrie Beckman and Matsuno blanked the Cardinals 6-0 at No. 3. The Fighting Irish followed with two 6-4 victories in succession, with Julia Andreach and Page Freeman winning at No. 1 and Nibi Ghosh and Pozder closing out their win at No. 2. Notre Dame proceeded to take all six first sets, but it was Matsuno, Andreach and Pozder who got the job done first at No. 6, No. 1, and No. 3, respectively. Each also had a 6-0 set in their individual victories.
The Irish returned to the court a few hours later for a matchup against Xavier, where the first two doubles matches split and it came down to court two. Ghosh and Pozder held tough down the stretch, securing the set with a 7-6 victory, dropping just three points in the tiebreak. Once again, Notre Dame refused to drop a set in singles. Pozder put the second point on the board, winning 10 straight games from 3-5 in the first set to defeat her Musketeer opponent 7-5, 6-0. Freeman and Matsuno sealed the second team victory of the day for the Irish, also each dropping just five games.
