Huskies Suffer First Setback To No. 25 Wisconsin

BOISE, Idaho – The Husky women’s tennis team fell short for the first time this season today in a neutral site match in Boise against 25th-ranked Wisconsin. The Badgers earned a 6-1 win, while the one point for the Huskies was a big win by Sarah-Maude Fortin over the 59th-ranked singles player.

Fortin upset Maria Sholokhova at the No. 2 singles position, 6-3, 6-3, but that would be the only match today for the Huskies (5-1), who will learn from the loss and prepare to host the ITA National Team Indoor Championships next Friday through Monday.

Hikaru Sato battled hard at the No. 1 spot but fell just short against 82nd-ranked Ava Markham, 6-4, 7-5. Astrid Olsen dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 3 to Alina Mukhortova, and Jennifer Kerr fell at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-3, to Taylor Cataldi. It was the first dual losses for both Olsen and Kerr.

Freshman Erika Matsuda moved up to the No. 5 spot today and battled into a first set tiebreak, but lost 7-6 (5), 6-3, to Xinyu Cai. Melissa Sakar fell at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-2, against Charmaine Seah.

Draws for the National Team Indoor Championships will be announced early next week. Washington will play its first round Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
